Development of a skytube
CRH Daylight & Ventilation has recently introduced a new skytube. It is possible to transport daylight to every possible room using this skytube system. This way daylight can be enjoyed in hard to reach spaces. The complete system was developed in cooperation with BPO.
The lighting efficiency of the system depends very much on how much light is collected by the dome on the roof. During the development special attention to this dome has been given. The dome has been constructed using two main planes under specific angles, this way the available daylight under different weather circumstances can be used most effectively. The lighting efficiency of the system is thanks to the optimal dome shape at least 65 % higher than competing systems.
Also, next to this performance gain, a reduction in the number of parts has been achieved. For every part the most optimal material and production method has been looked at. For the production of the total system a significant number of materials and production methods are employed. The achieved reduction of costs could therefore be invested in the application of advanced materials. Also during development a close eye was kept on the assembly of the system, so the installation costs could be kept to a minimum.
Based on ideas of and in close cooperation with CRH a new standard in skytubes has been set: increased lighting efficiency, increased insulation characteristics and reduction of installation costs. The system has a distinguished look because of the used materials and the fine detailing. Especially noteworthy are the brushed aluminium styling ring and the diffuser with a “frosted” look.
